Bergamot Citris bergamia
Bergamot (Citris bergamia) is named after a small town in northern Italy where the tree is extensively grown, and the oil from its fruit provides the unique flavour of Earl Grey tea.
The delicate scent and flavour of the Bergamot orange lies somewhere between that of oranges and lemons, with decided floral overtones. A second oil, called Petitgrain, is distilled from the leaves of the Bergamot tree. The unrelated American Bergamot flower, Monarda didyma, was named after the scent of the fruiting tree.
We use organic bergamot essential oil in our Gorgeous Earl Grey to bring verve and lift to this delicate tea.
