Aniseed Pimpinella anisum

Full of sweet-shop memories, this powerful aromatic has actually been used for thousands of years, not just in foods for flavour, but also as a digestif.

The herbalist, John Gerard wrote in 1597 ‘The Seed wasteth and consumeth winde, and is good against belchings and upbraidings of the stomacke, alaieth gripings of the belly.’ Simply translated this means it's good if you eat too many beans.

In India, a pinch of aniseed is often eaten after meals to soothe the stomach and aid the digestive fire.

The aniseed used in our Detox and After Dinner comes from organic farmers in Turkey where the fields are filled every year with the aromatic, cloud like, flower heads.
